Mashed beet greens-spinach curry (Beet greens and palak Massoppu)

Massoppu means mashed greens. This is a recipe from Karnataka. Living in Mysore, I was lucky to be introduced to a large variety of greens. I do not know the english equivalent for many of them. The vendors will have separate mix of greens for this. You just have to tell them that you need greens for massoppu. Combining several greens together is a sure way to get all their benefits at one go. My mom usually makes this with a mix of spinach (red and green), fenugreek leaves, Sessile Joyweed (Honagone) as we had them growing in our garden. I usually make them with chard and collard greens. Here I have tried it with beet greens and spinach. I have followed my mom’s method.

Beet greens-1 cups chopped
Spinach-1 cup
Tuvar dal-1/2 cup
Shallots-2
Garlic -2 cloves
Green chillies-2
Tomato-1
Tamarind-1 marble sized
Coriander leaves-2 sprigs
Salt

For tempering
Oil-2 tsp
Mustard seeds-1tsp
Dry Red chillies-2 broken
Garlic- 1 clove, sliced thin

Combine the first set of ingredients in a pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles. Once the cooker cools down, open the lid and blend it in a blender (instead you can mash them using a spoon instead). Heat oil, splutter the mustard seeds. Then add sliced garlic and red chilly. Fry for 2 mins. Add the tempering to the mashed greens. Enjoy it with rice, curd and some fryums/pappadam.

Tips:
  • You can replace green chillies with red chillies. Adjust them according to your taste.
  • Make them with any greens of your choice. Spinach or chard is the best.
  • Use seeded tamarind. If using tamarind concentrate, dissolve it in little water and filter it (it has stones sometimes)
